It
has now been 7 years since it’s founding, during which Cathay
Playhouse has successfully put on seven productions. For it’s eighth
annual production, Cathay Playhouse has proudly chosen De-Ling and
Empress Dowager Ci-Xi, a script by well-known playwright Mrs. HE
Ji-Ping.
The
story of De-Ling and Empress Dowager Ci-Xi sets in late Qing Dynasty,
a few years after the revolutionary Wu-Xu Reform. Lady De-Ling, the
daughter of Qing ambassador in England, was brought up and
well-educated in England. De-Ling is a bright and well-educated young
lady who’s used to western culture and democratic society. The
ambassador’s family returned to Beijing after being recalled from his
post. De-Ling was summoned to meet the Empress Dowager in the
Forbidden City, and was found interesting due to her knowledge of the
western society and wisdom. Therefore a position was given her to be
the Empress’s maid. Soon De-Ling was surprised by the repressive
pedantry of the politics and rules of the time, and shared the idea of
reformation with the progressionists. She then started trying to
introduce to the Empress advanced theories and inventions. Her action
and zeal has became the daily refreshments of the Empress, but a thorn
in the flesh of the tuft-hunters.
The
story of De-Ling and the Empress Dowager Ci-Xi is a epitome of the
entire society then. The conflict between De-Ling and the Dignitaries
is a reflection of the reformists and the old-school bureaucrats.
The
year 2011 will be the 100-years’ commemoration of the Revolution of
1911, a milestone of democracy in Chinese history. This production a
dedication to the 1911 Revolution and also a carrier of Cathay
Playhouse member’s pioneering spirit.
The
script of Lady De-Ling and the Empress Dowager is a masterpiece of
Mrs. He Ji-Ping. It is a foundation of the production and the whole
team is confident to accomplish another masterpiece in Cathay history.

華軒劇社成立於2003年，宗旨是守護和傳承話劇藝術，為廣大的藝術追求者和藝術愛好者提供一個展現自我、肯定自我的機會和舞臺。作為一個非營利性話劇
社，走過七年實屬不易，也是所有演員和幕後人員努力的結果。值得一提的是，華軒劇社從演員到行政，包括後臺人員幾乎都是不到30歲的青年。大家利用業余時
間聚在一起編排和探討，才有了今天的一點成績。
從2003年開始，華軒劇社堅持每年給悉尼的觀眾奉獻一出制作精良的話劇，演繹了眾多著名劇作家的優秀作品。最初的兩部戲分別是杜國威的《讓我再愛一
次》和《我和春天有個約會》，之後則是賴聲川的《暗戀桃花源》。2006年開始，華軒與著名旅澳中國兒童戲劇家王惠莉和胡玲蓀二位老師結緣，共同指導演出
了《日出》，獲得熱烈反響。胡玲蓀老師在07年初不幸逝世後，王惠莉老師獨自指導華軒，話劇《開市大吉》和《家》都獲得了空前的成功，使更多悉尼華人和西
方話劇愛好者認識到華軒劇社和中國話劇。2009
年，華軒劇社大膽嘗試了莎士比亞喜劇《威尼斯商人》，以中國人的語言和思維模式重現了經典西方戲劇，受到社會各界的好評。2011年是辛亥革命100周
年，為了提升澳洲華人華僑的向心力和凝聚力，紀念辛亥百年，華軒劇社在2010年特意選擇了《德齡與慈禧》作為本年度的大戲。
在演員陣容上，端月、章士鎧、孫喬、黃倩韻、丁雯雯等一批主要演員已在多年的劇目中扮演過許多令觀眾難忘的角色，首次出演的幾位新演員也是由華軒在年初
精挑細選的。劇中的德齡並非歷史上的真實德齡，慈禧也不是人們印象中的慈禧，光緒、皇後都有他們不為人知的另一面，這次華軒從人性的角度對這些人們耳熟能
詳的人物重新演演繹，希望能構築出新的意蘊。服裝和布景也是今年大戲重要的一部分，華軒特別從中國運來清宮戲服，力求給觀眾真實的感覺。從7月份開始，華
軒劇社將定期在官方網站、官方論壇和其它網站中發布演員履歷照；在8月份發布演員定妝照，及《德齡與慈禧》宣傳片。其它活動和信息都將在華軒官網進行發
布。
